Lab Equipment


The Yan lab has a wide range of equipment available for interdisciplinary research in nanoscience, biology and photonics as summarized below:

Nanoscience
  • Chemical hoods, centrifuge, analytical balance, ultrasonic bath, isothermal bath, oven, furnace, hotplates, autoclave reactors, refrigerator, UV/Ozone cleaner, Laurell spin coater, UV/VIS spectrometer and other standard equipment for materials synthesis and processing
Biology
  • Biological safety cabinet (Thermo Scientific 1300 Series Class II), benchtop centrifuge (Sorvall ST 8), incubators (Heracell™ VIOS 160i CO2 Incubator and Heratherm™ Compact Microbiological Incubator), autoclave sterilizer, and optical microscope
Photonics
  • Customized optical table (two Newport RS2000, 5 ft × 8 ft, linked in a L-shape configuration)
  • Ultra-Narrow Linewidth CW Tunable Ti:Sapphire Laser (Spectra-Physics Matisse 2 Linear Z pumped by a 532 nm Millennia eV 15 W pump laser, tuning range 730-930 nm, linewidth <4 MHz, output power 3.8 W at 780 nm)
  • CW Tunable Ti:sapphire Laser (Spectra-Physics 3900S pumped by a 532 nm Millennia eV 10 W pump laser, tuning range 675-1100 nm)
  • Ultrafast Tunable Ti:Sapphire Laser (Coherent Chameleon Ultra II equipped with pulse picker and Chameleon VUE second harmonic generation system, average power > 3.5 W, pulse width 140 fs, tuning range 340-540 nm and 680-1080nm, repetition rate ~9.5 kHz to 4.75 MHz and 80 MHz)
  • Diode-pumped solid-state lasers (narrow bandwidth 405 nm laser for Raman spectroscopy and regular DPSS lasers at 405 nm, 473 nm, 589 nm and 980 nm)
  • Spatial Light Modulators (two Hamamatsu X13138-02 modulators, and one Meadowlark Optics P1920-400-800-HDMI modulators)
  • Digital Micromirror Device (Type-A DMD DLi6500 Development Kit)
  • Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting System (PicoQuant MultiHarp 150 4P TCSPC device with Excelitas SPCM-AQRH-13-TR-BR2 single-photon counter)
  • Spectroscopy Platform (Andor Kymera 328i imaging spectrograph equipped with Newton DU920P-BEX2-DD CCD, dual inputs and outputs, covering UV to NIR spectrum)
  • Fiber spectrometer (B&W Exemplar)
  • Microfluidic flow control system (Fluigent Flow-EZ module with two channels)
  • Inverted optical microscope (Olympus IX73)
  • Customized microscope (Thorlabs Cerna)
  • Nanopositioning Microscope Stage (PI Nano XYZ piezo system)
  • CMOS Cameras (multiple FLIR Oryx or Grasshopper cameras)
  • Various light analysis devices (Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, beam profiler, power meter, photodetectors, spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope, and data acquisition card, etc.)
